Get started

ThirdEye lives in your menu bar and reads the screen only when you ask. Here is everything from download to first answer.

Apple-silicon Mac
running macOS 14 or newer.
A ThirdEye account
Sign in with Google, GitHub or Facebook from Settings → Account.

Install

  1. Download the disk image and open it.
  2. Drag ThirdEye into Applications.
  3. Allow the first launch. This build is not notarized, so macOS shows “ThirdEye Not Opened”. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the security section and choose Open Anyway, then confirm.
  4. Follow the setup wizard. Three short pages: permissions, your hot corner, your preset. ThirdEye then sits in the menu bar with no Dock icon.

Click the menu-bar icon for the popover. Right-click it for Test Overlay and Diagnostics.

Permissions

ThirdEye needs one permission: Screen & System Audio Recording. Nothing else.

The setup wizard asks for it. If you missed the prompt:

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording.
  2. Switch ThirdEye on.
  3. Quit ThirdEye from the menu bar and open it again.

Using ThirdEye

1Trigger

Dwell in your hot corner (bottom-right by default) or press ⌥⇧E.

2Capture

ThirdEye reads what is under the pointer. Words first; pixels only when it must.

3Answer

The result appears in a quiet overlay. Esc dismisses, ⌘C copies.

Presets

Pick one in Settings → Capture.

  • Multiple Choice answers the question on screen.
  • Screen Summary gives a short summary of what is visible.
  • Custom Prompt runs your own instruction, saved.
  • Interview Practice gives three Python approaches to a recognised question and saves them to Apple Notes so you can paste and run the code. Turn saving off in Settings → Output.

Troubleshooting

"Signed out" when you trigger

Analysis needs an account. Open Settings → Account and sign in. One account is active on one Mac at a time; signing in elsewhere asks whether to move it.

The overlay never appears

Right-click the menu-bar icon and choose Run Diagnostics. It checks the permission and the connection and tells you exactly what to fix. Show Test Overlay in the same menu confirms the overlay itself works.

Nothing happens in the hot corner

Check the dwell time in Settings → Capture. A longer dwell needs a longer pause. The shortcut ⌥⇧E works regardless.

Interview Practice says it is unavailable

The service's practice catalogue is not loaded. Try again in a minute; if it persists, tell us below.

Uninstall

  1. Quit ThirdEye from the menu bar.
  2. Move ThirdEye.app from Applications to the Trash.
  3. Optionally remove it from System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording.

Privacy

ThirdEye looks at your screen when you ask it to. Screens contain messages, credentials and personal data, so this page says exactly what leaves your Mac and what does not.

What leaves your Mac

  • In Hyper Private mode (the default), ThirdEye reads the words on screen on your Mac and sends only that text. The picture is sent only when too little text can be read.
  • In Hyper Accurate mode, the still frame itself is sent every time.
  • Either way, the request goes to ThirdEye’s analysis service, which passes it to an AI model with storage turned off, and returns the answer.

What never leaves your Mac

  • Screenshots are never written to disk. They are captured into memory, shrunk, sent, and discarded.
  • ThirdEye’s own windows are excluded from every capture.
  • No AI provider keys exist in the app. The Mac talks only to ThirdEye’s service.

What we keep

  • A minimal, encrypted account profile so you can sign in, and which Mac the account is active on.
  • Per-day usage totals for quotas.
  • Metadata only about requests: sizes in coarse bands, timings, status codes. Never the screenshot, the text read from it, the prompt, or the answer.

We do not keep your sign-in provider’s tokens, your avatar or your username.

What the app keeps locally

  • Your settings (hot corner, shortcut, preset, overlay style). Never any analysis text.
  • One sign-in credential in the Keychain, not synced to other devices.
  • Interview Practice answers are saved to your default Apple Notes account so you can paste the code; screenshots are never saved to Notes. Turn saving off in Settings → Output.

Your responsibility

Capture only content you are authorized to send. The Interview Practice preset is for mock interviews and self-study, not for unapproved help in a live assessment.

One account is active on one Mac at a time. Keep your sign-in credentials to yourself. We may close accounts that abuse the service or its quotas.

No warranty

ThirdEye is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. Answers come from an AI model and can be wrong; check anything that matters.
